Frozen Japanese Shishamo, Willow Leaf Fish (8pc/pk)

Shishamo (シシャモ) is a small Japanese fish from the smelt family, traditionally associated with Hokkaido. It’s especially prized because it is often eaten whole, including the bones, skin, and in many cases, the roe (eggs) inside the female fish. The name is sometimes used loosely in restaurants for similar smelt species, but true shishamo has a delicate, slightly oily richness when grilled properly.

How it’s eaten

1. Grilled (most common)

  • Lightly salted and grilled whole until the skin is crisp
  • The head, bones, and fins are all edible
  • If it contains roe, the inside becomes soft, creamy, and slightly briny
  • Usually served with a wedge of lemon or a small squeeze of citrus

2. Pan-fried or teppan-style

  • Cooked in a pan with minimal oil
  • Gives a crisp exterior while keeping the interior juicy
  • Often served as an appetizer or izakaya dish

3. Deep-fried (less traditional but popular)

  • Light batter or plain fry
  • Extra crunchy texture, often served with dipping sauce or mayonnaise

What it tastes like

Shishamo has a clean, slightly smoky seafood flavour with a light natural sweetness. The roe, when present, adds a rich, almost creamy contrast that makes it especially prized.

In short: it’s a small fish meant to be eaten whole, usually grilled simply, and enjoyed for its contrast of crisp skin, soft flesh, and optional roe richness.
