Aka Uni, Red Sea urchin 赤うに is commonly found in the southern parts of Japan, mainly the Kyushu islands and its vicinity. Aka Uni is the least abundant Sea urchin in its family and it only available during certain parts of the year.
Aka Uni, Red Sea urchin is the smallest of all the Sea urchin, comparing the size to Bafun Uni, Aka Uni is almost half its size in length and width. Its size however is made up for in its taste and texture. Aka Uni is rich and dense in seafood umami flavor. Each lobe has an almost paste like texture and mash potato like mouth feel. Aka Uni are usually a faded yellow to chestnut brown color and are always packed in smaller 80-100g box.
Aka Uni is used in all kinds of dishes, from Pastas to Sushi, Risottos' to Clay pot Rice. It is also extremely poplar eaten with plain seaweed and Soy Sauce!
